When Roman merchants and soldiers came to Madurai to trade in pepper

 

 

 

These traders used to take advantage of the monsoonal winds blowing in the Arabian Sea to reach Kerala ports. It was a perilous 45-day journey from a port in Egypt to Musiri. From there, they would make the journey by road to cross the Western Ghats
