Neemrana Baoli to Get National Heritage Tag

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Fifteenth-century’s magnificent nine-step deep structure, Neemrana ki Baoli or baodi, and an adjacent fort with the similar namesake at a little-known village in Rajasthan’s Alwar are all set to get the national tag. 

 

 

The ancient architectural baodi and monument are  presently  in a state of utter negligence with garbage littered around and the fort’s walls defaced. 

 

 

With an aim to protect this heritage site of the 15th century, the Arceheological Survey of India (ASI), an autonomous body under the Union Culture Ministry, has issued a draft notification to declare the said ancient monuments to be of national importance. 

 

 

“Any objection to the declaration of the said ancient monument to be of national importance may be made within a period of two months from the date of issue of this notification,” says the notification signed by Usha Sharma, Director General of the ASI. 

 

 

“The move (of bringing it under the national monuments umbrella) will put this marvel of Rajasthan on the tourist map as well as ensure its protection,” said a senior official from the Ministry. 

 

 

The site  was built by the rulers of Neemrana for famine relief as well as a stopover for the travellers to get some respite from the scorching heat of this desert land. One has to descend around 200 steps in order to reach the bottom of this step well, and to enjoy the cold air no matter it is scorching outside. 

 

 

There are passageways, chambers and steps which provide access to the well. Also there are well laid out galleries and chambers where people can relax during the extreme temperatures. 

 

 

Talking about the usage of such structures, the official said that step wells like Neemrana ki Baoli in the country were used for spiritual purpose as well as to collect and store water for irrigation and are architectural marvels. 

 

 

The official pointed out that Neemrana ki Baoli, Chand Baoli, Rani ji ki Baoli and Mahila Bagh Jhalra are some of the step wells in this northern Indian State. While some like the Neemrana ki Baoli remain lesser explored and now dilapidated, the Chand Baoli has already risen to international fame.
