Ex-Minister now as environmentalist
Chennai: Former Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has said that he has now become an environmentalist and this was due to the position he held during the previous government.
Speaking about the conservation of nature at the silver Jubilee celebrations of C P Ramaswami Aiyer Foundation here yesterday, he said that he had learnt that the economic growth should not be at the cost of environment during his tenure.
'There is no other nation where nature is adored like in India. At the same time, we also take the liberty to destroy the environment to attain substantial development,' he said.
'Our entire existence will be at risk if we fail to conserve our nature and environment education plays a crucial role to teach the younger generation,' he said, appreciating the steps taken by the CPR Foundation in protecting the sacred groves in India.
The CPR Foundation presented the 'Green Teacher' award to G Prabhakar of Keshav Memorial Boys High School, Hyderabad for conducting various camps on ecological development and for encouraging the students to take up the issue in their neighbourhood.
The 'Green School' award was presented by Department of Environment and Forests Secretary Hans Raj Verma to N S N Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chitlapakkam for employing innovative techniques in keeping their campus clean. The school is also into rainwater harvesting and planting trees in the neighbourhood.
CPR Foundation director Nanditha Krishnan said that they have been contributing textbooks for Matriculation and CBSE schools and also for the University of Madras. She also added that the organisation has restored 52 sacred groves in the past 25 years.
Ministry of Environment Secretary Ashok Lavasa and CPR Foundation chairman M S Swaminathan were present on the occasion.
