Situated at a height of more than 6000 ft., in the Garhwal Himalayas.  Gauri kund is the famous Hindu pilgrimage site on the way to the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand. It is associated with the story of Shiva and Parvati.  The legend says that Parvati performed severe penance at Gauri kund in order to win over Lord Shiva.  It is also said that they were married at Triyugi Narayan which is located nearby.  Legend has it that this was also the place where Lord Ganesha acquired his elephant head.  The story says that once Parvati went to take a bath and asked Ganesha not to allow any one into the vicinity.  Lord Shiva appeared at this spot but He was stopped by Ganesha. Enraged, Shiva cut of the head of Ganesha.  Parvati was inconsolable and insisted that the boy be brought back to life.  In order to placate her, Shiva cut off the head of an elephant and placed it on the Ganesha’s body.  From that time onwards Ganesha has acquired an elephant’s head and trunk and He is loved and worshipped in this form.

Roop Kund , Gharwal Himalaya

(Source: http://musetheplace.com/travel-destinations-with-a-mysterious-past-iii-roopkund-lake/)

Situated at a height of 5029 metres above sea level in the lap of the Trishuli massif, Roop kund is called the `mystery lake’.  This is because human and equine skeletal remains from the Paleolithic age were found here in 1898.  So far no satisfying theory has been found to explain these remains.  The lake is surrounded by rock strewn glaciers and snow clad peaks.  However, the lake is only 2 metres in depth.  It is covered by snow for most part of the year.  This lake has a special significance for the goddess Nanda and her devotees.
