Workshop on elephant habitats to be held

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Thiruvananthapuram: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the state forest department will jointly organize a regional-level technical workshop to design strategies for the protection of elephant habitats. 

 

 

The two-day workshop, the first of its kind in this region, is being organized with the participation of Wildlife Institute of Indiaand Periyar Tiger Conservation Foundation at in the capital city on January 11 and 12. State forest minister K Raju will inaugurate the workshop on Thursday at 10 am. 

 

 

The organizers are expecting the participation of a group of senior officers and managers of elephant reserves of South Indian states, experts, representatives of various developmental agencies and other stakeholders. 

 

 

The workshop gains significance as currently the habitats, as well as the wild elephant populations, are under tremendous pressure. The concept of elephant conservation has become multi-dimensional due to the increasing instances of human-elephant conflict (HEC), habitat degradation, and fragmentation of landscapes as well as poaching, the organizers said. 

 

 

The Mudumalai-Bandipur-Nagarhole-Wayanad forest landscape and its connectivity with the Eastern Ghats support the largest population of Asian Elephants in India. The situation, the organizers said, demands planning and implementation of elephant conservation programmes based on landscape approach, with a focus on management issues and participation of neighbouring states.
