70-year-old banyan tree gets new lease of life

A 70-year-old banyan tree (Ficus benghalensis), which leaned on the roof of the police outpost at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in the recent gusty winds and rain, got a new life as Nature enthusiasts worked throughout Sunday and transplanted it at a new location.

K. Syed of Osai envionmental NGO, who coordinated the works, told The Hindu that the banyan tree (Aalamaram in Tamil) got the right home as a school named after the tree gave space on its campus for the transplantation.

“The management of The Aalam Montessori Home School at Kalapatti contacted us and informed that they were interested in giving space for the transplantation of the tree. The tree was transported 15 km from CMCH for the transplantation. Officials from the revenue, police, Coimbatore Corporation and Tangedco extended support for the initiative,” he said.

Volunteers trimmed the branches of the banyan tree on Sunday morning before digging the earth around its trunk. The uprooted tree was transported on a truck to the new place along with some thai mannu (soil from the home ground). It was planted on the school premises late on Sunday.

“Banyan tree can grow 1,000 years or more. We expect the tree to be alive 1,000 years or more at the new location. The trimmed branches of the tree will be used for planting,” said Mr. Syed.
