Port Blair - Youth engagement workshop by CPR Environmental Education Centre at FTI from Aug 18-22, 2017
C.P.R. Environmental Education Centre (CPREEC) has been sanctioned the project named ‘Eco-Eureka – Youth engagement workshops on Nature and Labs’ by the National Council for Science & Technology Commission (NCSTC), Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.
The workshop aims at highlighting the concept of environment and ecology, identify and trace out the problem areas in environmental degradation, highlight and discuss the recent trends in environmental pollution, document and to disseminate the effective science communication measures in popularizing environmental conservation, highlight the critical role of print and electronic medium in popularization of science and environmental ecology and to bring out pro-environmental behavior and attitude.
In this connection, CPREEC, in collaboration with the Department of Environment & Forests and Department of Higher Education, Andaman Administration will organize a workshop-cum-residential camp at the Forest Training Institute (FTI), Wimberlygunj from Aug 18-22, 2017. Students of Tagore Government College of Education and Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya in Port Blair will participate in the camp.
The inaugural function will be held on Aug 18 at 9.30 am in the Conference Hall, Forest Training Institute. Dr. K. Ravichandran, Chief Conservator of Forests, Research and Working Plan, Department of Environment & Forests, Andaman and Nicobar Administration will be the chief guest, while Mr S. K. Thomas, Divisional Forest Officer, South Andaman will be the guest of honour on the occasion.
Besides lectures by eminent subject experts, the participants will be taken on field visits to the Reserve Forest, mangroves and coastal areas. The students will be given hands on experience on laboratory techniques at the Laboratory of the Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI).
Eco Eureka, a youth engagement workshop, is about instilling scientific temperament among the young minds by adopting experiential learning methodology. Students tend to learn by experiencing the nature and related activities, this in turn enhance their understanding on nature and as well create a positive impact towards nature conservation.
A group of 25 college students of 18-25 years are engaged in the five day workshop cum residential camp. They are involved in series of nature-based outdoor activities designed to enhance their consciousness and in-depth understanding about nature and natural systems.
The participants shall be trained on environmental quality monitoring procedures i.e. analyzing the pollution level on air, water, noise and soil. They shall be trained on usage of instrumentation, handling the chemicals, followed by education and public awareness on the pollution level. Training on laboratory procedures, nature conservation, renewable resources for sustainable futures and ecological restoration shall be conducted in the indoor setting with appropriate illustrations.
