Dam waters submerge monuments in Hampi
Copious rainfall in the catchment areas of Tungabhadra dam in Hospet, Bellary district, has submerged a few monuments in the Unesco heritage site of Hampi.
As water level in the dam reached the brim, about 1.9 lakh cusecs of water was released from all 33 crest gates, which submerged a few monuments on the banks of the Tungabhadra river in Hampi. The world-famous monuments of Purandar Mantap, Vaidik Mantap, Yatri Mantap, Kotilinga, Shiva statue, Kampa-Bupa Marga used to reach the Ram temple, and the Kampli fort area are submerged.
The capacity of the dam is 100.85 tmcft. The Kampli-Gangavati bridge is also submerged, throwing traffic movement out of gear. All buses and vehicles are now reaching Gangavati via Hospet.
An alert has been sounded among villagers on the banks of the Tungabhadra to move to safer areas. “We are ready with rescue teams to prevent people from using Kampli bridge, and to rescue anyone who's caught in the waters,“ Hospet tahsildar LD Chandrakant told TOI. He said tourists coming to Hampi have been asked to be cautious while visiting temples and monuments on the banks of the river.
