The Droog

THE DROOG

Location The Nilgiris District (15 kms from Coonoor), Tamilnadu
Altitude 1918 meters
Legends and Mythology

Droog locally known as Pakasuran Malai, is linked to the demon Bakasura.

It is also known as the ‘Hulika Durg’ in Kannada language. It is named after the neighbouring village Hulikal or Tiger stone. Legends hold that the village is so named because in it a Bagada killed a man-eater.

The place is famous for the Droog Fort, once used by Tipu Sultan as a military outpost. All that remains of this fort now is just a wall. The Droog is approachable only by a 3-km trek path covered with tea plantations.
